History..

Now lets take a brief look on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's History. Some Historians say the ORIGIN of Jiu-Jitsu originated from India, practiced by Buddhist monks concerned with self defense. Then it would work its way through Asia, China then finally to Japan where it gained its popularity. The rest of its history will be explained by this video:

The Gracies were the pioneers and they brought the art to a different level. Carlos Gracie opened the first academy as the "Academia Gracie de Jiu-Jitsu." Then Carlos shared his knowledge with his brothers. Carlos' younger brother, Helio Gracie, having a small frame and had difficulty executing some of the techniques, modified the techniques and used leverage, momentum, flow etc.. And because of Helio Gracie, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was born and planted the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Helio has become one of the sport heroes in Brazil. The Gracie clan had expanded and evolved a lot and had become well known in Brazil. Rorion Gracie, Helio's son had brought the "Gentle art" to America. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would then evolve leaps and bounds to become what it is today. The Gracie's today are still continuing their lineage and family tradition and are producing world champions in the sport, world renowned instructors and academies. Gracies.. we salute you.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport and as a way of life...

BJJ today is becoming a world renowned sport. It is evolving to become a home for athletes who are making a living out of the sport that they love. It will become an Olympic sport.. a sport of such height will eventually get there. In this sport, you can play with the gi(kimono) or without the gi (nogi). there are no strikes, no punches, no kicks, headbutts, eye gouging, kneeing, elbowing and the like.. that is why its called "The Gentle Art". How would you fight without strikes? you fight with grappling.. you fight with throws, sweeps, movement, control, armbars, shoulder locks, chokes, foot locks. There is a point system in this sport, in case the fight wasn't ended by a submission hold or DQ'ed. The points and some rules cannot be explained properly in this blog, if you are new to it, there are things you have to understand first, through BJJ sessions or Youtube sessions. But generally, the goal is to make your opponent submit with a submission hold. The sport is nicknamed "The Game of Human Chess".. you think, you move, act, react, defend, attack, submit and you win or you lose. It's a beautiful sport. It's a sport of Hard work, Respect, Sacrifice and it is a sport of accomplishment. It develops the mind and the body.

As a BJJ practitioner and competitor myself, I have experience the thrill of the sport through competing and through the journey of hard work. Competition and training Lets you experience and develop:
-Focus                                                 -Respect and Humility
-Good health                                       -Sportsmanship
-Determination                                   -Resilience
-Bond with teammates                       -Fun
-Spirituality
and more.. all these traits are very important and  related with the reality of life. You have to focus on your goal, maintain a good, healthy diet and good health and have the determination to work hard and win. Through the journey of competing, you create a bond with your teammates from training together and fighting together. When competing, my teammates and I always find spiritual peace, asking help from the almighty, we learn a lot within our selves. Everyone loses, it creates respect, humility, sportsmanship and resilience, which are all needed to win, not only in sports but also in life. Most world champions say that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lifestyle, it guides and leads practitioners to morals and virtues.. Above and below are video interpretations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a way of life... Enjoy :)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Changes Lives...

BJJ changes lives through philosophy..for example smaller man, beats much bigger man.. it happens all the time in Jiu-Jitsu, thus it implies humility. That is what Jiu-Jitsu does, you can't be world champ and not be humble.. It crushes your ego and make you think clearer. BJJ not only changes lives through philosophy but it also saves lives from dark paths of death. There are multiple reported stories of practitioners defending themselves from danger from robbery and the like. They rescue themselves and others using Jiu-Jitsu.. whether it's through their physical BJJ blessings or through their smart, ego-less minds made from "The Art of Human Chess".
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu also helps a lot of unfortunate people build a brighter future for themselves and their family. Here is a video showing an example of how this art provides a path towards success for young children who have had and would have had harder lives..
This video is only a trailer of the a 20 min documentary
"The Main Tournament of my Life". Its awesome and made
by Stuart Cooper. you gotta check it out.

There are also accounts of people who use the gym as a place to sleep, eat.. they make the gym their home. They work in the gym, train there, work hard and eventually they become world champions.. the world's elite. Amazing isn't it? How Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can give you so many things, it makes you work to be successful.

suppose you moved to a different place or got lost on a foreign country with lots of cash in your pocket and you like sports.. where would you go? what would you be doing without any friends? I suggest you go and enroll in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym.. within 2 weeks you would have at least 10 friends, some exercise, a new hobby or a new sport and FUN!

So.. what is it about Jiu-Jitsu that straightens your life out? well one of the reasons are the gym rules, you get them as soon as you enroll. every dojo or academy has rules. These are some common rules and rules at our academy that relate to the reality of life and should be used every second of every day.. forever.

  • Leave your ego behind
  • Don't come late to class
  • Respect your teammates
  • Maintain good personal hygiene
  • Approach and greet your head coach with respect
  • Keep the gym clean, don't leave empty bottles behind
  • Tap before it snaps or taking a nap
  • Safety, make sure when you apply a lock or throw, it is controlled

All of these rules can be related and are essential to life.

Jiu-Jitsu keeps going on and on and on, it is ENDLESS..

There is no end to this art, it just doesn't exist in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Every single technique can be done in different ways. There are many dimensions and styles. Techniques don't stop coming and moral lessons don't stop getting learned, Jiu-Jitsu evolves everyday... everyday when people are practicing on and off the mat. Even world champions never stop improving and never stop learning. Here is a video featuring multiple time world champion Robson Moura in the documentary "Jiu-Jitsu has No End" by Stuart Cooper. Again, its just a trailer.. see the actual documentary coz it's awesome.

If your'e new..

And interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, be sure to research, check it out, enroll in a gym, you won't regret it. Sorry, but it is very hard to explain clearly all the assets, endless techniques and everything else in one blog. Here is a look on some Jiu-Jitsu movement. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, go to a dojo with supervision then do it there.. I will post a video just to give you an idea..

Jiu-Jitsu is for everybody..

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is for anyone who wants to join.. absolutely anyone.. men or women, young or old. Gracie Jiu-jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. was originally made for the small, the old, the thin, the weak.. for them to have the ability to defend themselves using perfect technique and leverage. No matter how small you are physically, but if you have BJJ as your friend, it would give you the confidence to defend yourself against a giant who knows nothing about it.
